The new terminal at Skavsta airport seen from Landside

The history of the airport at Skavsta goes back to 1939, just before the war, when three small airfields were prepared in the surroundings outside the city of Nyköping. In the beginning of WWII when the new reconnaissance wing F11 was set up, it was therefore placed at Skavsta which was one of the three airfields and the airbase was inaugurated at October 14, 1941. F11 was the country's only pure reconnaissance wing and the bulk of modern reconnaissance technology and tactics was developed here. During the wing's heyday about 900 people served here, it was also the largest airbase in Sweden and over the years more than 15,000 young men did their national service at F11.  The S16 Caproni was the wing's first reconnaissance aircraft but most of all the wing was renowned for its many Spitfires. F11 was the only Swedish wing to have Spitfires, famous from the Battle of Britain. F11 had fifty S31s from 1948 to 1955. The development of modern reconnaissance aircraft began with the S31. A great deal of this interesting history can be seen in the new F11 museum at Skavsta, well worth a visit.

Like most of the wings from the war also Skavsta was later closed as an airbase, but not until 1980. After some years a new development started in 1984 when the community of Nyköping opened the airport as a civilian operation, the first in the country that was privatized. In 1998 90% of the airport was bought by the British owned company TBI which after that has invested heavily in new buildings and equipment. The amount of passengers has raised very fast and is now over 1 million/year, making Skavsta to the fourth largest airport in the country. Recently a new terminal is therefore opened there. The biggest operator is Ryanair which has made Skavsta to its main hub in Scandinavia. Ryanair is today the second biggest operator in Sweden after SAS.

The scenery covers the airport area in close detail, where most of the buildings around the apron are included and rendered with sharp photo textures. In this package two more airports are added - ESMX Växjö/Kronoberg and ESGP Gothenburg City Airport, Säve - the latter is by the way also an ex-military airport plus an important airport for Ryanair. You will by this get the two biggest Ryanair airports in Sweden.

The package is compatible with FS2004/FS2002.

The Airport Handbooks for all three airports can be downloaded free here (when they will be finished): HANDBOOKS
